One of the joys of eating seasonally, is the abundance of our favourite fruits at different times of the year.

In autumn and winter, it’s sweet navel oranges, pears, and rhubarb. In summer, strawberries, raspberries, apricots and blackberries, plums and peaches are overflowing on shelves.

All of these fruits are fantastic for cakes, desserts, crumbles, pies, and other baked delights. But what do you do, when you’ve still got leftovers that you don’t want to go to waste?

With just two other ingredients, and in under 10 minutes of your time, you can turn this fruit into delicious, homemade jams too, using CSR Jam Setting Sugar.

It is estimated that Australian households, on average, waste around $2,000-$2,500 of food per year! Fruits and vegetables are up there with some of the most wasted foods.

Turning a glut of leftover fruit, fresh or frozen, into jam, is a delicious, economical and simple way to use it up. Along with saving you money, reducing foods waste is also good for the environment. Wasted fruits and vegetables that end up in landfill produce methane, which is a key greenhouse gas emission.

The three ingredients you need to make jam are:

  • Fruit – fresh or frozen (thawed)
  • CSR Jam Setting Sugar
  • A knob of butter

Mixed together and boiled for four minutes, these simple ingredients transform into a delicious, thick, fruit-filled batch of jam. The short boiling time of this recipe means the jam retains the fresh, fruit-flavour and natural, vibrant colour of the fruit used to make it too.

Along with reducing food wastage, making jam is a great way to keep enjoying your favourite fruits, long after their season is over. It should be stored in sterilised glass jars – clean jars can be heated in the oven at 120°C or boiled in water for 10-15 minutes to sterilise.  When stored in a cool, dry place, homemade jam will last up to one year. And once opened it is best kept for one month in the refrigerator.

Use up any jam that’s not eaten in our delicious jam-based recipes too, such as shortcakes, biscuits, puddings, muffins, sponges and tarts. And everybody loves a jar of homemade jam – they make perfect gifts too!

Next time you’re at a loss as to what to do with all that leftover fruit, remember the humble, homemade jar of jam, using CSR Jam Setting Sugar. It’s a delicious and easy way to reduce food wastage, save you money, and enjoy your favourite fruits, all throughout the year.
